News President Alvi Announces Elections. In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Alvi said that he was under oath to preserve and protect the Constitution and that there was no impediment to invoking his power and authority to announce the date of the elections after consulting the ECP.

The President announced Sunday, April 9, 2023, as the date for holding the general elections of the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Provincial Assemblies under Section 57(1) of the Election Act, 2017.
According to a press release issued by the Press Wing of the President’s Secretariat, the president requested the ECP to issue the electoral program in accordance with Section 57 (2) of the Election Law.
In his letter to the CEC, according to the press release, the president emphasized that there was no restraining order from any of the judicial forums and that there was no bar to invoking the power and authority vested in him by Section 57(1).
